Check that motorhome insurance quote

So, it’s that time of year again! The insurance on your motorhome is coming up for renewal and you’re dreading the thought of the premium notification. Perhaps it’s time for a new motorhome insurance quote?

Why bother – they’re all the same?

No, they’re not.

As with all insurance, prices, terms and conditions can vary between insurance providers. What you actually ask for will also make a large difference to what you end up paying.

It may be helpful to think about your motorhome insurance quote as telling you three basic things:

  • what it covers (and by definition therefore, what it doesn’t cover);
  • what conditions and terms apply (such as exclusions);
  • what control you have to vary the price up or down.

The first and third of these can be manipulated by you to some extent to either reduce your premium cost or increase it.

How can manipulation change the price?

This should not be a surprise because in life you often get what you pay for.

So, if your requirements are high for a top-of-the-range vehicle and full cover on a new for old basis, then this typically will increase the price of your premium.

More relevantly perhaps, your motorhome insurance quote will be affected by factors that you do have even more control over.

For example, if you accept a higher excess you may see a reduced premium as a result. Joining a recognised owners’ or motoring association may have a similar effect.

There are a whole range of such factors that you may able to use to your advantage in such a way.

What about exclusions and conditions?

Any insurance policy will contain its own terms and conditions. These typically can’t be varied although some may be changed based upon paying a slightly higher (or lower) premium.

What is important about the conditions is that you understand them and comply. If you don’t, you run the risk of invalidating your cover entirely.

A good example is that many motorhome insurance policies will exclude the use of a motorhome for regular commuting. You may also find that the fitting of an immobiliser and other security devices are mandatory.

That’s why it’s always a very good idea to look at these carefully when you’ve received your motorhome quote.

Getting and using a new quote

Getting a quotation is relatively easy. Taking the time to study it and obtain clarifications, if necessary, could help you gain increased control over your insurance costs.

So, that motorhome insurance quote needs not be dreaded. It could be a step towards allowing you to keep more of your money in your bank account as opposed to that of the insurance company!
