Northern Ireland insurance – house considerations

If you live in Northern Ireland, insurance for your home is readily available.

Yet some of us may have a tendency to believe that such insurance is all pretty standard and that prices vary little.

In fact, this is typically not the case. Insurance providers may, in fact, take very different views about the nature of risk and how much that translates to in terms of the premium they charge.

Here are just a few examples where Northern Ireland insurance for homes may contain variations between different providers:

• cover against subsidence may or may not be included as standard;

• policies may vary in terms of the extent to which they will cover external items around your home, such as satellite dishes, patios, verandas or garden sheds etc;

• it may typically be a good idea to have a degree of third party liability protection, just in case somebody is injured (or their property damaged) in or around your home and you are held legally accountable – policies may vary in terms of the breadth of cover provided;

• it is not unusual to find a policy that provides both home buildings insurance and contents cover – but some contents cover may exclude certain high-value items such as electronic equipment, cash, jewellery and so on;

• in insurance today, due to concerns over global warming, insurance providers are typically very aware or the increased risk of flooding in certain areas – some policies may be rather more restrictive than others in terms of what cover they will provide against this risk (the position may also differ significantly depending upon where you live);

• finally, some Northern Ireland insurance for houses may offer rather more in the way of opportunities for discounts (e.g. by installing alarms and deadlocks etc) than others – it may be worth checking!
